HERNDON, VA (February 25, 1998) · The National Electronics Manufacturing Initiative (NEMI) consortium announced today the launching of its 1998 technical roadmapping effort.
NEMI invites all North American electronics companies to join its Technology Working Groups in Portland, Oregon on March 19 and 20 to begin the nine-month roadmapping effort.
The goal of the NEMI roadmap is to identify the key technology and infrastructure developments needed to allow the North American electronics manufacturing industry to remain competitive over the next decade.
The roadmapping process is led by some of the leading companies in the industry who define the cost and performance objectives for their future products. Technical Working Groups (TWGs) composed of experts from the original equipment manufacturers (OEMs), suppliers, government, universities, and other related consortia/trade associations are in place to define the technology and infrastructure needs to meet the product sector objectives.
NEMI's vision is to ensure a world-class manufacturing environment in North America that is competitive for high volume electronics. The NEMI roadmap is a critical element of this process since it allows the industry to identify major gaps that could impact the capabilities of the supply infrastructure in North America. Closure of these gaps can also improve the competitiveness of downstream industries such as automotive, computers, telecommunications, and aerospace/defense.
Improvements planned for the '98 roadmap include:
- Closer ties with all national roadmaps · coordination of schedules and years for projection; agreement on product segments.
- Improved communication with funding agencies and research communities.
- Validation process for previously published roadmaps.
- New thrusts:
- More detail on the 14 technology/infrastructure areas we have previously worked.
- New areas: Environmentally conscious manufacturing, supply chain management, ceramic substrates (joint with IMAPS/IPC), and digital and mixed mode semiconductors
The March kick-off meetings will be held at the Double Tree Hotel Columbia River in Portland Oregon. Contact NEMI for further meeting details at the numbers below or visit our web site for sign up instructions: http://www.nemi.org.
About NEMI
The National Electronics Manufacturing Initiative was formed in November 1994 to facilitate long-term North American leadership in electronics. The industry led consortium of electronic equipment manufacturers, suppliers, associations, government agencies and universities. NEMI's goal is to help its member companies become global leaders in volume electronics manufacturing. NEMI also works with government, universities, and other funding agencies to identify infrastructure weaknesses and set priorities for future industry needs and R&D initiatives.
