March 16, 2000 · As part of the ongoing collaboration between IPC--Association Connecting Electronics Industries and the National Electronics Manufacturing Initiative (NEMI), IPC SMEMA Council’s Electronics Assembly Process Conference & Exhibition (APEXsm) 2001 will host the unveiling of NEMI’s Roadmap 2000.
NEMI’s latest roadmapping effort kicked off at APEX 2000; results of the 2000 Roadmap will be revealed in a Wednesday keynote address at APEX 2001.
Companies throughout the electronics industry use the NEMI roadmap in making strategic business decisions.
"Technologies and market trends are changing at a very rapid rate in the electronics industry," says Jim McElroy, NEMI executive director and CEO. "The roadmaps help electronics manufacturers keep their fingers on the pulse of the latest innovations and helps them plan future manufacturing investments." Attendance from last year’s APEX proved the wisdom of the ongoing collaboration between IPC and NEMI.
"The inaugural APEX event showed us how important it is to provide an effective meeting place for the electronics world’s most influential players, spokespeople and technologists," says Denny McGuirk, IPC president. "The visitor figures showed us that a truly diverse profile of companies and countries were present."
During activities for the 1998 roadmap, more than 400 individuals from 175 companies and organizations contributed to the end product.

The National Electronics Manufacturing Initiative (NEMI) was formed in November 1994 to facilitate long-term North American leadership in electronics. The industry-led consortium is made up of more than 50 electronics equipment manufactures, suppliers, associations, government agencies and universities. NEMI’s members represent a combined total of more than US $200 billion in 1998 revenues and employ more than 1.25 million people.
APEX has been organized by the IPC SMEMA Council in response to an industry need for a trade show that is cost-effective and fair for exhibitors, and highly focused on the products and technology of the electronics industry. This approach, coupled with a premier conference program, organized by the industry, aims to deliver the most attractive package to exhibition visitors. APEX will feature all segments of the electronics assembly industry, from bare boards to tested assemblies, and is the only show in North America that will showcase machinery from every major pick-and-place equipment manufacturer.
IPC is a US-based trade association dedicated to the competitive excellence and financial success of its more than 2,600 member companies which represent all facets of the electronic interconnection industry, including design, printed wiring board manufacturing and electronics assembly. As a member-driven organization and leading source for industry standards, training, market research and public policy advocacy, IPC supports programs to meet the needs of a $33 billion US industry employing more than 330,000 people.
