HERNDON, Va. — May 21, 2001 — The National Electronics Manufacturing Initiative (NEMI) today announced the addition of seven new members. Agilent Technologies Inc., Advanced Micro Devices Inc. (AMD), Hewlett-Packard Company, iManage Inc., KIC, the Ministere de l’Industrie et du Commerce (Province of Quebec) and Loctite Corporation are the newest organizations to join this North American electronics consortium.
"We are extremely pleased to welcome these organizations to our membership. The new corporate members are all leaders within their respective areas of the electronics industry and will be significant assets to NEMI’s efforts," said Jim McElroy, executive director and CEO of NEMI. "We are also excited about the addition of the Province of Quebec’s primary economic development group and hope this will lead to further participation from Canada’s electronics manufacturing industry."
Until recently, NEMI membership was restricted to companies that were North America-owned. However, at the end of last year, the NEMI board voted to expand membership to non-North American companies that are committed to the NEMI mission of strengthening the North American electronics manufacturing supply chain. Loctite Corporation is the first company from outside the region to join under the new guidelines.
McElroy said NEMI is encouraged that it continues to enlist new participation, despite the recent downturn being felt by all companies involved with electronics manufacturing. "We see this continued interest as a testament to the value NEMI provides as a forum where organizations can pool resources as well as efforts to achieve common goals of the industry," he added.
"AMD has a tradition of working closely with our customers. NEMI allows us to engage with customers and suppliers on issues that effect all of us over a broad range of applications," said James Hayward, senior member of the technical staff at AMD.
Miles Moreau, KIC vice president of R&D, stated, "There were a number of excellent reasons for KIC to join NEMI. KIC has always been a technology leader, and NEMI offers us the opportunity to participate in projects that facilitate the emergence of new technologies for the electronics manufacturing industry. We anticipate that NEMI participation will help us stay ahead of the curve and continue to provide our users with the technology they need to be competitive. KIC looks forward to participating in NEMI’s Factory Information Systems and Lead-Free projects."
NEMI has active projects in a number of diverse areas that impact the manufacturing infrastructure. Each member company decides which areas are of interest and then determines its participation accordingly.
"The global electronics environment requires us to partner in developing electronics manufacturing solutions and standards," said Greg Henshall, lead engineer for environmentally friendly manufacturing for HP. "We are looking forward to working with the NEMI Environmentally Conscious Electronics TIG [Technology Integration Group] and partners."
"iManage is proud to join NEMI and is looking forward to making significant contributions to the manufacturing industry with this prestigious organization," said Shams Rashid, senior vice president of iManage. "We have a great deal of experience we can share with our fellow members in technology integration and creating greater efficiencies in the value chain."
