iNEMI Kicks Off European Roadmap Effort at Productronica

Additional sessions will cover research needs & priorities, Pb-free soldering and medical electronics

HERNDON, VIRGINIA, USA (October 18, 2007) — The International Electronics Manufacturing Initiative (iNEMI), an industry-led consortium focused on identifying and closing technology gaps, will kick off the European effort for the 2009 iNEMI Roadmap next month at Productronica in Munich.

The roadmap meeting is scheduled for November 14 and is co-sponsored by the IEEE CPMT Society, Fraunhofer IZM and IMAPS Europe.  The half-day session will introduce the new product sector plans for the 2009 Roadmap, review key technology chapters from the 2007 Roadmap, and provide information about the roadmap process for anyone interested in participating.

“Participation in this important industry roadmap is not limited to iNEMI members, and we believe Productronica is an excellent venue to allow us to broadly reach out to the companies and individuals involved in the electronics industry in Europe,” said Jim McElroy, CEO of iNEMI.  “For the past two roadmap cycles, we have actively recruited participation from Europe, and have been successful in getting companies from the region involved.  We hope we will continue to expand our participant base in Europe in order to ensure that regional issues and concerns are accurately reflected in the roadmap.”

iNEMI will also be making a presentation on its recently published 2007 Research Priorities.  This document identifies R&D priorities for the next 10 years by combining findings from the 2007 iNEMI Roadmap with R&D needs identified through gap analysis meetings.  This information not only helps iNEMI focus its deployment projects on high-impact areas where the consortium can make a difference in the marketplace, but it also assists corporate research labs, government funding agencies and academic research centers in focusing limited resources on those critical areas that will yield the greatest return.

Additional iNEMI presentations and sessions at Productronica will discuss industry research needs and iNEMI deployment activities:

Tuesday, 13 November

  • iNEMI advanced materials research projects
  • Development needs for high-reliability Pb-free electronics
  • 2007 iNEMI Research Priorities and 2009 Roadmap (VDMA-Productronics Forum)

Wednesday, 14 November

  • 2009 iNEMI Roadmap/European kick-off meeting
  • Optimization of Pb-free soldering (Productronica Forum)

Thursday, 15 November

  • Medical electronics technical plan
  • Medical electronics deployment projects

About the iNEMI Roadmap
Since 1994, iNEMI has mapped the future manufacturing technology needs of the global electronics industry in an effort to identify key technology and infrastructure developments needed to ensure the competitiveness of the supply chain over the next decade.  This roadmap has become recognized as an important tool for defining the “state of the art” in the electronics industry as well as identifying emerging and disruptive technologies.  It also helps set priorities for research and development over the next 10 years, and is not only used by industry but also by government funding agencies and university-based research programs.  The 2009 Roadmap will cover six product sectors (through the Product Emulator Groups, or PEGs), and 19 technology and infrastructure areas (through the Technology Working Groups, or TWGs).  iNEMI membership is not required to participate in the roadmap.  For information about the specific product sectors and technology/infrastructure areas covered, go to

About iNEMI
The International Electronics Manufacturing Initiative’s mission is to identify and close technology gaps, which includes the development and integration of the electronics industry supply infrastructure.  This industry-led consortium is made up of approximately 70 manufacturers, suppliers, industry associations and consortia, government agencies and universities.  iNEMI roadmaps the needs of the electronics industry, identifies gaps in the technology infrastructure, establishes implementation projects to eliminate these gaps (both business and technical), and stimulates standards activities to speed the introduction of new technologies.  The consortium also works with government agencies, universities and other funding agencies to set priorities for future industry needs and R&D initiatives.  iNEMI is based in Herndon, Va. (in the Washington, DC area), with a representative office in Shanghai, China.  For additional information about iNEMI, visit http://www.inemi.org.
