Component and Board Marking Project

Chair: Vivek Gupta, Intel Corporation
Co-Chair: Alan Ater, Sanmina-SCI Corporation

One of the issues surrounding the transition of the electronics industry to Pb-free assembly is marking of components, boards and end products.  This iNEMI project worked closely with JEDEC, IPC and other industry groups to develop an industry-accepted identification scheme for Pb-free parts.  They also developed part-numbering guidelines for Pb-free change management, including unique part numbers for Pb-free SKUs, and created a Pb-free vocabulary guideline.  The group?s board marking recommendations were integrated into JEDEC standard JESD97, Marking, Symbols, and Labels for Identification of Pb-Free Assemblies, Components, and Devices, released in May 2004; and provided input for IPC-1066, Marking, Symbols and Labels for Identification of Lead-Free and Other Reportable Materials in Lead-Free Assemblies, Components and Devices, published in December 2004.  The vocabulary guidelines developed by the project team have been incorporated into the RosettaNet dictionary of terms.
