Fiber Optic Splice Loss Measurement Project (completed)

Chair:  Peter Arrowsmith, Celestica

The Fiber Optic Splice Improvement Project identified the need for splicing and measurement standards for optical module assembly (especially for low loss, dissimilar fiber types), absorbing fibers, and repeatability assessment.  The group found that the methods commonly used for measuring loss require careful implementation and assessment to achieve trustworthy results, and that standards were needed to describe the practical aspects of the measurement methods in more detail.  Based on this work, iNEMI organized the Fiber Optic Splice Loss Measurement Project to address the need for new standards in the areas identified.  The project developed a description of a low loss measurement method that will form the basis of a new standard, to be written in partnership with TIA (Telecommunications Industry Association).
